December is normally a pretty good month for me. I've always been a sucker for Christmas (minus all the crappy Christmas music), it's my birthday, it's finally getting that chill in the air (I like the first frost but that's about it)...all good stuff. This December is shaping up pretty darn good so far.
1) I got that gov't stimulus check that I was supposed to get last year. $600 in my pocket! Presents for everyone! Which leads me to...
2) I came up with (after some help from jr) some pretty good gift ideas this year.
3) Money again. I get my leftover sick time paid out next paycheck. As I have 4 sick days, that's a reasonable
chunk o' change.
4) Sephora send me a $20 gift card so I finally got the vanilla grapefruit perfume I have been salivating over for the last year. Plus I get samples and a birthday gift. I chose their Vanilla Cupcake shower gel - it smell scrumptious. Try it.
5) This is only potentially good; but I applied for a new position at work. If I get it, I will be in a different department and no longer under Stoneface's thumb. There's a (probably) small pay increase, but I'm so desperate to be off the call floor that I'd probably take the job without more money.
6) I have a yummy dinner tonight with my dad and one of my friends. Then after, I get another kind of treat from a different friend.
7) Might not seem like a big deal to most, but I finally made an ob/gyn appointment. It's a good thing.
8) Sent out my holiday card to a random soldier stuck in Afghanistan. Maybe a new penpal!
Anyway, that is the stuff that's making me happy right now. It may not last, but I'm going to enjoy it while I have it.

A Post Just So I Can Say I Posted
I don't really have anything specific to write about...nothing new there. I guess the most exciting? interesting? good? news is that I'm starting to come out of the funk that has plagued me for the last six weeks. It's not that I haven't had my low points before; they just usually happen in the fall/winter months. I think this one hit harder because I'm used to being far cheerier (as far as that word can be applied to me) in the spring/summer months.
Quick poll: Who has a Wii? Those of you who raised a hand: Who finds that they try way too hard when playing games like Mario Slugger and have shoulder pain the next day? *cheepcheep Just me, huh? I don't know what it is about that stupid console but if there is throwing or batting involved, I'm going all out. It's the same with Mortal Kombat. I will twirl and kick and punch. Star Wars - I will attack you with my plastic lightsaber. Most of these games don't actually require you to move that much, but I suppose that moderation has never been my watchword. I would just hate to have to go to my doc with a raging case of Wii elbow.
Let's see...I think my pen pal is bored with me. As I wasn't expecting him to stay in contact after he got home, I'm not really all that bummed out about it. I provided a service and he no longer needs it. Honestly, I was surprised he emailed me at all after getting home. Anyway, I wish him well.
There's a project at work that I'm supposed to be getting trained on but something keeps thwarting my (tiny) efforts to get logged in. Which is fine by me. If Stoneface wasn't such an ass, I wouldn't be doing a job that the company wanted to hire someone full-time to do. Stupid pharma wouldn't lay out the $$$. Bitches.
There's a movie coming out this Friday that I'm super excited about. It's called Moon and it stars Sam Rockwell. Look at me! I'm the next IMDB! Anyway, the movie looks creepy and cool and I can't wait. Hopefully I'll be able to post a review. Not that reviews are my strong suit. I'm not one for analyzing stuff. I was the kid in English class who said "How do you know that's what the author meant? Did you ask him? Maybe the room is just where she likes to sit and isn't a metaphor for her being imprisoned in her delusions."
I told you I had nothing much.

Daily Dose of Crazy
I had a dream last night that I got a $73,000 tax refund. Waking up sucked.
I'm all paranoid that the base my pen pal is at got overrun by Taliban.
I've had three cups of coffee and it isn't even noon.
I parked my new Rabbit next to a coworker's Rabbit. I couldn't resist.
I don't have anything for lunch.
I choked on a Triscuit.
My recliner fell backwards last night - with me in it. And there was a witness.
I'm going to a buffet for the first time since changing my eating/exercise habits. I'm a little concerned at my control.

Calm Down
It's OK. I'm OK. It's no big deal. People friend random quasi-strangers on Facebook all the time, right? And I am sending this dude about 2 letters a week. On the plus side, there aren't any pictures on my Facebook that I'm ashamed of. I'm verrrrrry careful to limit photographic evidence of my activities. Not that I do much that's really bad.
Really, it was a bad idea because it ruins my whole "no face to the name" thing I was trying to do. I don't want to know if he's attractive, or single, or anything like that. I am writing letters to give a soldier a (hopefully) bright spot in his day. The last thing I need is to have random nonsense floating around my brain. It's definitely a good thing that he probably won't be able to approve/deny the request for a couple of weeks. I should be in a fairly normal mental space by then.
Random aside: I am posting this from my home! I am wireless, baby!

Past Sins and Present Woes
Someone please tell me what sin I'm paying for. Did I mistreat my Walkman? Was I a perpetrator of car stereo abuse? What did I DO?!?!
While I'm sad and frustrated at my inability to have wireless internet at my home, I believe that my IT guy feels worse. I just have to sit there and say "Oh, that sucks" or "It's totally got to be Comcast". He's the one poking around, trying to make my recalcitrant network actually work. I have faith that he will make it work.
On a completely unrelated note, I've gotten a couple of emails from my penpal. He's only received one of my letters so far, but seems pretty excited to get more.
On a less happy note, they laid more people off at work yesterday. I think I'm fairly secure, but these are uncertain times. Normally, it doesn't really bother me when people get booted (unless I like them), but this time I felt it. I decided to go home and drink a bit. One large vanilla screwdriver later, I was reasonably cheery.

To Whom it May Concern
An interesting thing happened today. OK, I found it interesting. You may think that I am just lame. Know what? I don't care.
Back in the beginning of December, my work gave us the opportunity to send a Christmas card to a soldier overseas. I decided that I wanted to send a card. Figure that everyone likes getting mail, right? So, I colored in my polar bear (camo) and wrote what I hoped was a witty and fun card. On a whim, I opted to include my email address. I thought it would be nice to have a pen pal. Haven't had one of those since, oh, 3rd grade or so. I gave an email address that I don't check much simply because it doesn't have my last name in it. Better safe, right?
Update: I'm finishing this post on Jan 9.
I checked the account and buried in my usual pile of stuff from Amazon and Comedy Central was an email with the subject "Ben in Afghanistan". Ben was the random soldier to receive my card and apparently liked it enough to email me. He was at a base for resupply and had emailed me on Jan 3. I wrote back, hoping that almost a week later, he was still able to get email. I told him he could include his APO so I could write him letters. I wasn't sure if I would catch him. He seemed pretty happy to have someone to talk to. Maybe he's hoping I will supply him with goodies from home. As he is from KS, I hope he doesn't expect any local delicacies.
Luck was on my side, and I did catch him before he went back to his usual base. Which, according to him, is one of the most remote in Afghanistan. He said it takes about a month for letters to arrive. He included his APO and I wrote him this morning. It's kind of strange writing a letter to someone who isn't going to read it for weeks. Oh, and the fact that I don't know him is a little weird too.
One thing I am refusing to do is imagine that he is some smart, handsome, funny, amazing guy. I did not write that card in the hope of obtaining a date. I'm not one of those sad women who write to men in jail and then marry them. And anyone who knows me AT ALL should know that I would not seek out another military man. Been there, done that, threw out the t-shirt. I really just wanted to brighten some poor grunt's day. It's got to suck so hard to be over there. And maybe he doesn't have a lot of family to write to him. Heh, or maybe he is hoping that I'm smart, cute, and awesome. Maybe he wants a date.
